Bioinformatics: Postdoctoral fellowship opportunity in Luxembourg in disease-related omics datasets

Dear colleagues

I am the national delegate of Luxembourg to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions (MSCA), a prestigious funding scheme by the European Commission to finance postdoctoral research projects. Researchers from any country of origin are eligible and there is no age limit. You can find more information on the MSCA fellowship here but I am also happy to answer any questions you might have.
I am contacting you because we are helping one of our clients, active in your field of research, to find the most promising postdoctoral candidates that would be willing to apply for such a prestigious individual MSCA fellowship at the host institute in Luxembourg. You will find more details on the host and the project below. I am asking you to forward this expression of interest to any potential PhD students finishing their thesis before September 2019 or postdoctoral fellows looking for new opportunities in a state-of-the-art research facility in Luxembourg. Luxembourg has a young research community that has grown considerably over the past 10 years due to a strong commitment by our government to invest in research and development.

Any interested candidates can directly contact me (charles.betzATluxinnovation.lu) and I will put them in contact with the principal investigator. Please get in contact as soon as possible (deadline April 30th) to have enough time to develop an exciting research project together with the host. An application to the MSCA scheme would entail that the candidate writes a research proposal together with the Luxembourg host institute. As a national contact point for Horizon 2020, we will support the proposal writing free of charge through trainings and writing support if needed. The deadline for the submission of the final proposal is in September 2019, the project would start around mid-2020. The fellowship includes a salary, travel and training costs as well as a family allowance if applicable.

Information on the host institute in Luxembourg: The Biomedical Data Science group at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine(University of Luxembourg) develops and applies bioinformatics software for the analysis of disease-related biological data in order to identify diagnostic biomarker signatures, characterize potential molecular drug targets and screen drug-like molecules. Our applications focus on the integrated statistical investigation of large-scale molecular and clinical data for complex neurodegenerative diseases, primarily for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. In particular, we develop machine learning methods for the joint analysis of multiple types of omics data from patient and control subjects by exploiting prior knowledge from cellular pathways and molecular networks. Integrative analyses of these data sources have the potential to provide models with increased robustness for diagnostic specimen classification and patient subgroup stratification. To elucidate specific molecular disease mechanisms, we complement these statistical investigations by bioinformatics approaches for network causal reasoning analysis, cross-species comparisons, the study of gender-specific pathological alterations and aging-related biomolecular changes as disease-promoting factors.

Potential ideas for the project: "The Biomedical Data Science group aims to contribute to a better understanding of early biomolecular changes in the age-related disorders Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease by applying new causal network analysis techniques to large-scale, disease-related omics datasets. Within this research scope, we are looking for a candidate interested in working on a project that integrates diverse molecular datasets from patient and control subjects, as well as in-vitro and in-vivo disease models, in order to identify early molecular network perturbations that drive disease processes.
The ideal candidate should have:
  • An academic degree in bioinformatics or computational biology
  • Prior experience in large-scale data processing and bioscientific programming is required
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge in next-generation sequencing data analysis, biostatistics, machine learning, pathway and network analysis
  • A cross-disciplinary aptitude, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and a keen interest in collaborative biomedical research
  • Fluency in oral and written English

I will happily answer any further questions that you might have.
Best regards
